Individual Nurse Needs

Many of our team trips require follow up appointments. Many of the organizations we visit are too busy to arrange these. We like to leave a nurse on-site to help facilitate this follow-up. We have also encountered a few organizations in need of an individual nurse to help on a daily basis. The needs are posted below, and are generally “on-going” in nature-meaning volunteers can start within 3-4 months of applying.

Bahay Tuluyan, Manila Philippines (1-3 months)

This organization gives the street children of Manila a place to go and provides them with much needed education.  While many of these kids should be in school the cycle of poverty often prevents that. There are a myriad of kids accessing this shelter and they need for a nurse to not only assess the children, but obtain parental consent to take them to get the free medical/dental care that they need.  Bahay Tuluyan also does outreach ministries to the poorest areas of Manila on a weekly basis.  As a nursing volunteer you would accompany the staff to these ministries, and help with health education teaching and assessments. There are social workers at the center that would help you obtain parental consent, and get the children to the proper care provider.  You would be responsible for improving the child’s health and access to healthcare as well as working in coordinating a plan with the social worker as to how to improve these children’s lives.  As you will soon learn there is never a simple solution to the problems these children face, but your time and dedication will help make their lives a little bit better.  Housing is included near the facility, and ran by children that use to be in the shelter. To learn more about the organization please visit: www.bahaytuluyan.com.

New Hope Cambodia: Siem Reap, Cambodia (1-3 months)

This organization will need a nurse volunteer to function as a school nurse.  They see 1000 children a day that come through their supplemental school, and for many this is their only source of healthcare.  What Nursing Beyond Borders hopes to accomplish with this position is to have the nurse establish a relationship with the local children’s hospital, and to facilitate healthcare for the children.  While attending to daily ailments is helpful the children also need health education, and the families often need assistance getting their child the care they need.  The parents spend most of their day either at work or caring for the house, and are not able to wait in the long lines at the municipal hospitals.  We would like to focus on the children that may need dental or optometrist follow up and assist the parents in getting the children to see the correct healthcare provider.  We would also like to ensure that the children are on a deworming schedule. Benito Juarez Primary School: Bucerías, Mexico (2-6 weeks)

We took a team to this school in April 2019, and found children that need local follow-up. We were able to have one-on-one consults with some of the parents, however the sheer number of consults and time restraints prevented us from talking with all the families. We have partnered with the local health clinic, Dr. Jose Perez, MD and Dr. Luis Guzman, DDS for free follow-up with these children, and sent home notes with all the children that needed follow up. The issue in this area as that parents do not have the time or resources to get their child to the needed provider. We would like a nurse to facilitate this. If you are interested in this opportunity please fill out an application.

Lao Friends Hospital for Children: Luang Prabang, Laos (1-3 months)

Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is an acute care paediatric hospital situated on the campus of Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital in Lao PDR. Since 2015 LFHC is dedicated to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to the children in remote areas of Northern Laos. Limited on-site radiology, pathology and pharmacy together with a homecare program complement these clinical activities. A major goal of this hospital is to promote the clinical learning and professional development of the local staff such that key positions within the hospital are progressively filled by a well-trained and dedicated local workforce.

The volunteer nurse will work with the Laos and international team, with the main responsibilities being clinical supervision and clinical education of Lao nurses. Shifts are 12 hours, rotating days and nights. Much of the teaching is done at the bedside although opportunities are available to deliver more formal teaching sessions are possible but will require approval from the Director of Nursing and Nursing Education team. The position is strongly clinical, helping provide real world application of theoretical nursing concepts and therefore requires volunteers who currently practice at the bedside or work in nursing education at their home facilities. The role will ideally require a minimum of 1-month commitment, longer commitments preferred and much appreciated.
